What you actually gain

A stock monitor stand sits on a footprint roughly ten inches deep and eight wide, right in the middle of the back edge. That is the deepest, most awkward part of a desk, and it is also where a corner setup has the least room to give.

Clamp an arm to the back edge and that whole area comes back. The monitor floats above it. In a nook this is the single biggest change you can make to a desk without buying a different desk.

Ergotron LX

Nearly eleven thousand reviews at 4.6 stars. No other product on this site comes close to that sample size, and on a number that large the rating is about as reliable as consumer feedback gets.

The mechanism is a constant-force spring rather than a gas cylinder. You set the tension once for your monitor’s weight and it holds. Gas cylinders lose pressure over a few years and monitors start drifting downward, which is the complaint that fills the reviews of every cheaper arm in the category.

It handles up to 25 lb and screens up to 34 inches, with 13 inches of height travel and 25.6 inches of reach. Above 20 lb that travel shrinks. Ergotron’s own spec sheet says a heavy monitor can cut the vertical range by 4.5 inches, which leaves 8.5. The lift mechanism is rated to 10,000 cycles and the arm is warranted for ten years.

Ergotron has started winding this one down. Its own page for part 45-241-224 carries a notice saying the SKU is phasing out and availability is limited, and the arm was out of stock there at $219.00 when I read it on 16 August. The replacement is the LX Pro. Amazon still had the original at $189.99 that same afternoon, so the resellers will outlast the factory.

The LX Pro is not a pick here, because I have not read its listings or its spec sheet yet and it has no owner feedback to speak of. The LX above is the one with 10,962 ratings behind it. I will write the Pro up once there is something to weigh.

What I passed on

Everything else, deliberately. Monitor arms are a category flooded with near-identical listings from brands that appear and vanish, most carrying a few hundred reviews and a gas cylinder that will sag inside two years.

Nothing I found came close enough to the Ergotron on either build or evidence to justify naming it as an alternative. I would rather name one arm I stand behind.

About the Kata

The Kata and Kata2 monitor arms are what these pages used to sell. They were contract fittings, ordered into offices alongside the desks, and they are not products you will find on a retail shelf.

If you specifically want a Kata, commercial dealers are where those lines still live. For everyone else, the Ergotron does the same job with a decade of warranty behind it.

The rest of the desk

An arm is the biggest single gain, and there are two more worth making once it is fitted.

The lamp is next, because a weighted base costs you roughly the same footprint you just recovered. Desk lighting for small surfaces covers why a monitor-mounted bar avoids that entirely.

Questions

Will it fit my monitor?
Check for a VESA pattern on the back, four screw holes in a square, either 75mm or 100mm apart. Almost every monitor has one. A handful of consumer models skip it and those need an adapter plate.

Is a dual arm better than two singles?
Two singles, usually. They clamp independently, so you can position each screen without the other one moving, and if one fails you replace one.

Do I need to worry about weight?
Yes, and people ignore it. Check your monitor’s weight without its stand, which is printed in the manual. Below the LX’s 7 lb minimum the spring pushes the screen up.
