If you want one Castlery sofa that can handle a busy house, this is the one I’d buy. It arrives fully built, so there’s nothing to bolt on, and owners say a spill comes out with a bit of wet tissue.

The seat is firm, so you sit on the cushion rather than down into it, which is lovely with a laptop or a plate on your knees.

It sits 16.1 inches off the floor, lower than a dining chair. If I had to pick one line from the reviews, it’d be “it’s a bit lower than I imaged, even after measuring 1000 times.”

It takes a mattress up to 13.8 inches thick, so a tall pillow-top is worth measuring.

Building it yourself means thirty-some steps, two people and most of a day, so this is the one piece where I’d pay for White Glove. It’s $100 to $150 on orders of $1,399 or more in selected cities, and a Twin on its own falls just under, so it needs another piece in the same order. The crew then builds it and hauls the boxes away.

Parts do go missing on some deliveries, and then the crew can’t finish the job. The wait for replacement parts has run to 16 to 17 weeks, which is a long time to live with a bed in pieces.

Once it’s together, though, you’ve got a lot of storage hiding under your bed, and in a small bedroom that’s hard to beat.

I wouldn’t wait for this one to come back. The Adams is a clearance piece, and its listing says no returns, no exchanges and no cancellations.

Every other piece here can be canceled free before it ships and sent back within 30 days, for 20% of the price. When you’re buying a sofa you’ve never sat on, that return is your safety net.

The Owen is nearly the same width, and it comes with the 30 days the Adams can’t offer.

What Castlery is

Castlery sells direct, so if anything goes wrong you deal with them.

With a brand I can’t sit on first, I’d read the warranty and the returns page before I let myself fall for a photo. Here, the warranty only covers furniture bought straight from Castlery, so I’d buy on the site and nowhere else.

A secondhand Castlery sofa might look like a bargain, but it won’t come with the warranty.

Is Castlery good quality?

Yes on the wood, and mostly yes on the sofas, though the fabric lets you down. The Seb table and chair are solid acacia and the Vincent tables are American walnut, and those are the pieces I’d buy without a second thought.

Owners call the sofas well made and comfortable, but the fabric pills, and the Hamilton pills worst. If you’re buying one, I’d budget for a fabric shaver and think of it as part of the price.

What the warranty covers

Ten years on the frame of a sofa, bed or dining chair, five on a table, and one year on the fabric. The fabric is what wears first, and it gets the shortest warranty.

If something does fail, the claim goes by email with photos and your order number. Ten years on a sofa frame is a long time, and it’s the part I’d most want covered.

What goes wrong

The sofa fabric pills, and things can arrive damaged or short of parts. When that happens, Castlery can be slow to help, and it’s worst on the Dalton bed.

Anything wrong is far easier to sort out while you’ve still got the boxes and your 30-day window. I’d open everything the day it lands, partly out of excitement and partly for exactly this reason.

What a return costs

Sending something back costs 20% of what you paid, taken out of your refund, and you’ve got 30 days from delivery to ask. Without the original boxes, Castlery charges another $50 per item, so flatten them and slide them behind a door for the month.

It has to go back as new, with no scratches or stains, and the delivery fee doesn’t come back. A sofa that turns out firmer than you like isn’t a fault in Castlery’s eyes, so it costs the same fee to return.

White Glove hauls the boxes away. I’d add it to a Dalton order of $1,399 or more, where the build makes it worth it, and skip it on anything I might send back. The 20% is the price of ordering a sofa you haven’t sat on, and it’s why I’d read the reviews closely first.

Have I ever charged a fee like that?

Yes when Corner Nook was an e-commerce store I had to have a policy like that. Furniture like this is expensive to move, and offering free returns cuts a huge amount on margins and could even put you in the red, so I understand why companies do it.

Who should skip Castlery

• If you like to order two sofas, keep one and send the other back, this isn’t the brand for it. Every return costs 20% of the price.
• If the fabric has to look new in three years, I’d look elsewhere. All three sofas here pill.
• If you’re more than two flights up, think twice. Standard delivery stops at the foot of the stairs, and the paid services go up two flights before extra charges may start.
• If you might send it back, skip clearance. It can’t be returned, exchanged or canceled.
