Banquette and Bench Seating Dimensions
Eight numbers. Two of them decide whether the thing is usable at all.

The short answer
Build the seat at 18 inches finished and pair it with a 30 inch table. That lands the twelve-inch difference in the middle of every range below and it is the combination that goes wrong least often.
Finished means after the cushion compresses under someone. Not the height of the empty box.
The two that decide everything
Seat height and table height are not independent numbers. What matters is the difference between them, and almost every uncomfortable banquette in the world is a seat and a table that were bought separately.
Seat height runs 17 to 19 inches measured from the floor to the top of the cushion. Table height runs 28 to 30. Put the two ranges together and the gap between seat and table falls somewhere between 9 and 13 inches, which is why the recommended figure sits at 10 to 12 inches.
Pick the wrong ends of the two ranges and you get a 19 inch seat under a 28 inch table. That is a nine-inch gap, your thighs press up against the underside, and nobody stays at that table for a long breakfast.
Seat depth, where deeper is worse
Depth runs 18 to 22 inches including the cushion. This is the one people get wrong in the generous direction, because a deeper seat sounds more comfortable and on a sofa it would be.
On dining seating it is not. Past about 20 inches a shorter adult has to choose between sitting back against the cushion, with the table out of reach, or perching on the front six inches with no back support at all. Watch anyone under about five foot four at a deep banquette and you will see the perch.
If you want depth for lounging, get it with cushions rather than with framing. An 18 inch deck plus a 4 inch back cushion gives you a 22 inch box that behaves like an 18 inch seat, and the cushion comes out when someone wants to eat.

The one that hides inside the tabletop
Knee clearance is 12 to 15 inches, measured from the top of the cushion to the underside of the table. Not to the tabletop. To the underside.
That distinction is where pedestal tables and farmhouse tables quietly fail. A two-inch thick top with a three-inch apron rail under it eats five inches before anyone sits down, and the listing quotes the height to the surface because that is the number people compare on.
If you are buying rather than building, the question to ask is what the clear height under the apron is. Most sellers will not have it printed anywhere, which tells you something in itself.
How much bench does each person need?
This is the figure with the weakest sourcing, and I would rather say so than round it into something confident.
Dimensions.com publishes 24 to 30 inches for chair spacing in a dining setting. That is chairs rather than bench width, and it is the closest published figure to the question. Treated as a proxy it works, because a person occupies roughly the same width whether there is a chair under them or not.
So: 24 inches per adult tight, 30 comfortable. Read that as a reasonable inference from a chair-spacing figure rather than as a published bench standard, because that is what it is.
One thing that is not an inference. On an L-shaped run, the inside corner where the two benches meet counts toward both and seats nobody comfortably, because two people’s legs want the same space. Subtract one seat from whatever the arithmetic gives you.
Does it fit the nook?
The walkway is the number that kills more nook projects than any other. 36 inches behind a seated diner is the minimum and 42 is where it stops feeling tight.
A corner nook only needs that clearance on the open sides. Two of the four sides are buried in walls, which is the entire reason the layout fits rooms a table and chairs cannot. More on why corner seating wins in a small room.
Questions
How high should a banquette seat be?
17 to 19 inches from the floor to the top of the cushion, and 18 is the safe choice. Measure it compressed, with someone sitting on it, not as an empty box.
What is the standard bench seat depth for dining?
18 to 22 inches including the cushion. Stay near the lower end unless everyone using it is tall.
How far should the bench be from the table?
10 to 12 inches from the seat edge to the table edge. That falls out of a 17 to 19 inch seat under a 28 to 30 inch table.
Does the cushion count in the seat height?
Yes, and this is the most common building error. A 16 inch deck plus 4 inches of foam that compresses about 2 gives you 18 inches finished. Build to 18 and add foam on top and you end up at 20.
Can I use a standard dining table with a built-in bench?
Usually, if it is 28 to 30 inches tall and you check the clear height under the apron rather than the height to the top.
