Bench and Banquette Cushions
The numbers
- Target 18 in from floor to the top of the cushion once someone is sitting on it
- 4 in foam compresses about 2 in under an adult, so build the deck 2 in below your target (Fine Homebuilding)
- Published thickness 2 to 4 in, with 3 in a common seat minimum (Corn Upholstery)

Cushion thickness is the number everyone asks about and the wrong one to focus on. Four inch soft foam and two inch dense foam end up at similar comfort and similar compressed height. Density does the work.
What actually decides whether a cushion is right is the compressed height, because that sets how far the seat sits below the table.
The number nobody prints on a cushion
Firmness tells you nothing about how long a cushion lasts. Density does, and almost nobody publishes it.
Foam By Mail is one of the few sellers that publishes both figures per grade, and the table is worth reading twice:

Look at rows one, three and four. Poly Foam and HD36 High Quality feel almost identical when you press them, at an ILD of 36 and 35. One is rated for one to two years and the other for sixteen. The difference is density, which you cannot feel in a shop and which no finished-cushion listing tells you.
The Foam Factory puts the mechanism plainly: density and firmness are “independent values for determining a foam’s qualities”, and density “does correlate to the quality and longevity of a product”. ILD is defined as the force in pounds needed for a 50 square inch indenter to compress the foam by 25 percent of its thickness.
Of the nine ready-made cushions I checked, not one published a density figure in lb/ft³ and not one published an ILD.
Three published something that looks like a density: “75D”. That is the Chinese convention, kilograms per cubic metre, and 75 kg/m³ converts to about 4.7 lb/ft³. That would make a budget bench cushion two thirds denser than the highest grade Foam By Mail sells, the one rated for sixteen years. Treat it as a marketing number rather than a measurement.
So when the reviews say a cushion went flat in a year, that is usually not a defect. It is the specification working as intended.
Getting the height right
Your target is 18 inches from the floor to the top of the cushion once someone is sitting on it. That is dining chair height, which is what your legs expect and what puts you about 12 inches below a 30 inch tabletop.
Four inch foam compresses about 2 inches under an adult. Fine Homebuilding’s breakfast nook build makes the arithmetic explicit: a plywood deck at 16 inches, 4 inch foam, 2 inches of compression, 18 inch finished seat height.
So measure your bench deck, subtract from 18, and double it. A deck at 16 inches wants 4 inch foam. A deck at 17 wants 2 inch foam, or 4 inch of something firmer.
On thickness, published figures cluster at 2 to 4 inches. Dimensions.com gives 2 to 4. Corn Upholstery sets minimums of 3 inches for seats and 2 for backs. Fine Homebuilding says in one article that 1 to 2 inches of firm padding is plenty and specifies 4 inch foam in another.
Both are right, which is the point. Ask a supplier for the foam density, not just the depth. A thick soft cushion bottoms out and a thin dense one does not.
Measuring a corner bench for cushions
Two cushions meeting at a corner is where this gets awkward.
Do not just cut one cushion to length and butt it against the other. In a corner, one cushion runs full length into the corner and the other stops short by the depth of the first. Get that backwards and you have a gap on one side and an overhang on the other.
Decide which leg runs long before you order anything. Usually the longer bench runs through and the shorter one butts into it.
Measure the seat, not the bench. The seat surface is 16 to 18 inches deep on most benches even when the overall unit is 24 to 26, because the difference is the reclined back. Order to the seat.
Measure at three points along the length. If the bench sits against a wall that bows, and interior walls are allowed to bow half an inch in 32 inches under the NAHB performance guidelines, a cushion cut to the widest measurement will not drop in. Order to the narrowest and let the gap fall at the back where the cushion meets the wall.
Subtract a quarter inch. A cushion cut exactly to the seat will bind on the sides. Suppliers usually build this in, but confirm.
Fabric
Kitchen bench cushions get food on them. Look for removable, washable covers with a zip, or an outdoor-grade fabric, which is built for cleaning rather than for weather. A fixed cover on a kitchen bench is a cushion you will replace instead of clean.

1. SUNROX LokGrip Memory Foam Bench Cushion — best reviewed, and read the cover line
Four inches thick, 2,496 reviews at 4.6, and the only cushion here with a stated UV figure.
The cover is FadeShield polyolefin, solution-dyed, which is the right construction for anywhere near a window. Solution-dyeing puts pigment into the fibre before it is spun rather than onto the surface afterwards, which is why the colour survives sunlight. SUNROX claims five years of UV fade resistance. For comparison, Sunbrella, the reference brand for this, carries a five year limited warranty on upholstery fabrics and ten years on shade and marine.

2. baibu Dual-Layer Bench Cushion — best if you want to wash it
Two inches, memory foam over a firmer base, and a zip that actually opens.
This is the one I would put in a kitchen. The cover unzips and goes in the machine, which sounds minor until you consider that a bench next to a dining table collects everything that misses a plate. Four of the nine cushions I checked cannot be washed at all, including the best-reviewed one above.
The two-layer build is also the right idea, even unverified. A softer top over a denser base is how proper seat cushions are made, because the dense layer carries the load and the soft layer handles comfort.

- Only one critical review exists on the listing, which cuts both ways: no flattening or shrinkage complaints, but a thin evidence base at 186 reviews. That single one-star review is about size, reporting a cushion “advertised as 40" wide. It clearly is not, measuring in at 39.5"”

3. baibu Classic Bench Cushion — thinnest, for a bench you already find comfortable
An inch and a half of foam under a zip-off polyester cover.
Buy this one only if your bench is already the right height and you want a surface rather than support. At 1.5 inches it will compress to well under an inch under an adult, which puts your finished seat height essentially at deck height. 4. Lakeside Buffalo Check Bench Cushion — the one that explains the category
Included as a warning rather than a recommendation, because it demonstrates the point better than any of the others.
The specification tab lists the fill as 100% polyester. Not foam. Polyfill, the same material inside a cheap pillow. It has no density rating because the concept does not apply, and it has nothing to recover with once it is compressed.
A reviewer put it more efficiently than I can: “Sat on it ONCE and it was flattened out.”
That is not a manufacturing fault. It is what fibre fill does under an adult, and it is why the fill line on a listing matters more than the thickness.

None of these vendors pays a commission. They are here because they solve the problem the reviews above keep describing: five of the nine ready-made cushions I checked carry complaints about the delivered size not matching the listing.

FoamOrder also states the two rules this site has been making from other sources: bench cushions should be at least three inches thick, and seat height wants to land roughly 18 to 20 inches above the floor. If you order custom, give them a density figure: ask for 1.8 lb/ft³ as a floor and 2.8 if it is offered. That is the difference between a seven year cushion and a sixteen year one at the same firmness.
