Breakfast Nook Sets

A breakfast nook set is two benches and a table sized to meet in a corner. Whether one works in your kitchen comes down to the clearance behind the open side. The NKBA planning guidelines ask for 44 inches there if anyone walks past while people are eating, and only 32 inches on the sides against walls.

Measure that before you look at a single product.

Six sets, and none of them seats five

Six sets below. Every one of them is sold as seating five people, and not one of them does.

That is not a figure of speech. Take the seating rule from the bench dimensions guide, 24 inches per adult as a squeeze and 30 for comfort, and apply it to the retailer’s own published measurements. The best set here seats four. Two of them seat three. The other two do not publish enough information to check at all.

There is a reason you cannot check this yourself while shopping. On every listing I looked at, the length of the L-shaped corner bench is missing from the specification table. The table lists the small secondary bench, calls it “Bench”, and gives you a number around 40 inches. Where the corner bench measurement exists at all it is inside a diagram image, which no comparison tool reads and most buyers never open. One listing files its 62-inch corner bench under “Chair”.

A note on where these picks point. Five of the six are Wayfair, and Wayfair pays this site a higher commission than Amazon does. I would rather tell you that than have you find out. The list looks this way anyway because Lark Manor, Laurel Foundry, Ophelia and East Urban are all Wayfair’s own brands and they have this category more or less to themselves. Where a set is sold elsewhere I have said so, and in one case the identical bench is available from Target under a different name.

Seat figures use 30 inches per adult and exclude the inside corner seat, which nobody can get out of without someone moving. All listing data was read live on August 3, 2026.

1. Laurel Foundry Chen 5-Person Corner Nook — best for most kitchens

The best-documented set here, and the one whose corner bench you can actually measure before you buy.

Wayfair publishes the corner arms at 48.03 and 63.98 inches, which sounds generous until you subtract the 19.85 inch corner section where the two arms meet. Take that out and you have 72.3 inches of straight seating, plus a 40 inch bench on the fourth side. Three adults at 30 inches each. Four if they know each other well.

What you get for that is solid pine on the seats and tabletop over an MDF frame, lift-up storage in both corners of the L, and a 43 by 27 inch table at 29.1 inches high. The set carries a 1,200 lb rating overall, which is the highest here by a distance and the reason it is first on this list. At 2,968 reviews it is also the most tested.

2. Ophelia & Co. Deral 5-Person Nook — best for actually seating four

The only set on this page that comes close to its own claim, and it is the least expensive one here.

The numbers work out better because the corner bench is longer. Arms of 48.2 and 43 inches, exclusive of a 21.2 inch diagonal corner, plus a 40 inch bench. That is 131.2 inches of usable seating against the Chen’s 112.3. Four adults at 30 inches, comfortably. Five if you use the corner and nobody needs to leave early.

Storage sits under the corner bench only, on buffer hinges, and the compartments are published at 42 x 11.4 x 37 inches and 26.2 x 11.4 x 37 inches, which is unusually specific for this category. The wood is solid paulownia, a light, fast-growing hardwood that is genuinely solid rather than engineered.

3. Red Barrel Studio Bagwell 5-Person Nook — best back support, with one caveat

The most reviewed set in this category by a wide margin, and the only one here I could not verify.

At 3,847 reviews and 4.5 stars it is the default choice for a lot of buyers, and the upholstered corner seating with a solid back is a real comfort advantage over the backless options further down. Foam-fill seats, charcoal fabric, a 43 by 27.25 inch table at 29.5 inches.

The caveat is why this sits third rather than first. Wayfair does not publish the length of the corner bench anywhere on this listing. The specification table gives you the 40 inch secondary bench and the table dimensions and stops. The block labelled Product Dimensions is a weight-limit infographic carrying no measurements at all. A dimensions PDF is linked, which I did not open. So the central claim, that this seats five, cannot be checked against anything.

4. Lark Manor Eslick Corner Bench — best if you already have a table

Two backless benches with lift-top storage, no table, and the most useful set of numbers on this page.

Because it is backless and comes in two pieces, this is the one you can actually plan around. Each piece gives 45.5 inches of seat within a 62.4 inch overall footprint, 16.5 inches deep, at an 18.2 inch seat height. That 18.2 is the highest seat here and the closest to the 18 inch finished height the measuring guide recommends. Storage inside runs 45.2 x 11.1 x 15.2 inches per bench, which is a lot.

Ninety-one inches of seat is three adults at 30 inches each. Wayfair says this seats five.

One thing worth knowing. This is the same bench Target sells as the Linon Tobin. The internal storage figure of 45.2 x 11.1 x 15.2 inches matches exactly, as do the 45.5 inch seats, the 16.5 inch depth, the 62.4 inch overall and the six month warranty. Wayfair rates it 4.4 across 656 reviews because it pools reviews across the whole product family. Target rates the same bench 3.82 across 44. Wayfair says it seats five, Target says four. Buy whichever you prefer, but read Target’s reviews first, because they are about this specific bench.

5. Lark Manor Selby Upholstered Corner Bench — best for a softer seat

The same footprint idea as the Eslick with a cushion on top and a flip-top underneath.

Rubberwood frame, upholstered seat, removable zip-off covers. Pay attention to that last one. Anything you sit on next to a table gets food on it eventually, and a cover that comes off and goes in a machine is the difference between a bench that lasts and one you resent. Same 16.5 inch depth and 18.2 inch seat height as the Eslick, same 600 lb rating.

The listing describes a single 45.5 inch module, so plan on buying two for a corner. That gives you 91 inches, which is three adults.

6. East Urban Home Lief 5-Person Nook — only for a genuinely tight corner

The most compact set here, and the one I would think hardest about.

The corner bench measures 47.4 by 62.2 inches, which Wayfair’s specification table files under “Chair”. That is not a typo on my part. In a three-piece set the third row has to be the corner bench, and a 62 inch chair is not a chair.

Two numbers give me pause. The seat depth is 11.8 inches. Today’s Homeowner quotes an Indianapolis cabinet maker with over a decade in the trade: do not go less than 18 inches deep if you want people to actually sit there. Every set on this page falls short of that, but this one falls furthest. And the capacity is listed at 251.3 lb for a set sold as seating five, which works out around 50 lb a person.

I am reporting the capacity as published. It may be a data-entry error, or it may refer to one component. Either way it is what the listing says, and it is the lowest figure here by a factor of two.

How to buy one of these without regretting it

Count seats honestly

The seating charts you find online assume people sitting all the way round a table. A bench does not allow that. Fine Homebuilding is blunt about it: put the seating on a bench and you can fill two sides of a rectangular table at most, or half the arc of a round one. So halve the manufacturer’s number, roughly. A set advertised for six seats three, maybe four if you pull a chair to the open side.

Bench length divided by 24

That is the commercial seating industry’s working figure, and both Corn Upholstery and Mega Seating and Design publish it. Dimensions.com calls 24 inches the minimum place setting and 30 the optimum. Two 96 inch benches give 192 linear inches, so eight seats at 24 or six at 30. Take one off for the inside corner, where the two benches meet and nobody can eat comfortably. Seven tight, five comfortable.

Check the table base

A four-leg table puts a leg exactly where the second person on each bench wants knee room. NKBA Guideline 9 asks for 24 inches wide by 18 inches deep of knee space per diner at a 30 inch table. A pedestal base clears it and four legs do not.

Seat height is 18 inches finished

Meaning after the cushion compresses under an adult. Fine Homebuilding’s nook build gets there from a 16 inch plywood deck with 4 inch foam compressing about 2. If a listing gives you a frame height, do that arithmetic before you order cushions. More on why it matters.

Look for a back with some recline

Fine Homebuilding specifies 7 to 9 degrees off vertical and a minimum back height of 16 inches above the seat. A dead vertical back is uncomfortable in a way no cushion fixes, and plenty of budget sets have one.

Think about who sits inside

In a corner nook, the person at the inside corner is trapped until someone moves. Fine Homebuilding’s rule is that seating should offer more than one way out, not counting crawling under the table. A table light enough to slide solves it. A heavy one on a rug does not.

Your corner is probably not square

The NAHB performance guidelines allow interior walls to bow half an inch in any 32 inches and still be compliant. Add baseboard at 9/16 to 3/4 of an inch, and a set that fits on paper can leave a visible gap in the room.
