How Long Does a Memory Foam Mattress Last Before It Sags?

Sleeping on memory foam, or about to buy some, and wondering how many years you’ll get out of it? Here’s what decides it, starting with the IKEA foam mattress I slept on.

Saatva has sent me two free toppers, each time after I asked. The first came while my 2016 Classic was breaking in, and the second in December 2025.

The short answer

A memory foam mattress usually gives you six to ten years before it softens and dips. For your next one, I’d pick the Memory Foam Hybrid from Saatva for about $2,150 in a queen, since I barely feel my wife roll over on ours.

Four years in, my old memory foam mattress had a dip, and it was lumpy. It was an inexpensive one from IKEA on IKEA slats, and I slept on it from 2012 to 2016. (I couldn’t tell you the model now.)

By then my back was aching all the time, too, and that’s when I started looking into hybrid mattresses.

My first Saatva arrived in 2016, and the delivery guys carried the IKEA mattress out with them. That’s one more thing I love about Saatva’s white glove delivery. The full-size Classic that took its place never had a dip I noticed.

So how many years will yours give you? That mostly depends on how tightly packed the foam is. If you’re here to check a listing, the number to look for is near the bottom, just before the questions.

Why does denser foam last longer?

There’s more foam in it. Density is how much one cubic foot of the foam weighs, and the more material that block holds, the longer it keeps the shape and support it started with.

Every night, your weight presses into the same spots, and the foam gives up a little of its firmness. You feel that first as softening and later as a sag, like the dip and lumps my IKEA bed had by the end. Denser foam takes longer to get there.

Firm and dense aren’t the same thing. A firm mattress can be made of light foam, and a soft one can be made of dense foam.

Companies that sell memory foam mostly put their own beds at up to ten years, and a few go to twelve. Those years come from the brands themselves, so they’re the best case.

How can you tell if a memory foam mattress is worn out?

It usually starts with the feel. As foam ages it softens and lets less air through at the surface, so an old bed can feel softer and warmer than it used to.

After that, you can see it. Look for a dip or lumps, foam that’s shifted, a deep dent where you sleep that stays after you get up, or a base you can feel through the mattress.

A faint outline of you isn’t a worry by itself. Saatva treats an impression of 3/4 inch or less as normal for memory foam, and they usually show up two to four years in. So a light impression at year three is just a broken-in bed.

Deeper than that? The sagging mattress guide shows how to measure it with a ruler and something straight.

How do you make memory foam last longer?

Give it a solid, flat base, and keep spills and heat off it.

If it sits on slats or an older frame, start there. A weak base can leave foam with sags that don’t come back, and that can mean replacing it early. Keep the slats 4 inches apart at most, or closer if the company that made your mattress asks for it.

Kids, pets, a glass of water by the bed? Liquid can break memory foam down, so a waterproof protector is worth having. (Leesa also asks that nobody jump or stand on the bed, which is a tall order with kids around.)

Heat may be hard on it, too, so leave the heating pad and the electric blanket off this bed.

And turn it head to foot now and then, if the company that made it says you can. Some would rather you didn’t.

Does memory foam last as long as a hybrid or latex?

A memory foam bed and a hybrid last about as long as each other. Latex usually lasts longest, and dense memory foam comes next. The mattress lifespan guide lines up the years for each type.

I’d buy Saatva’s Memory Foam Hybrid. A hybrid pairs innerspring coils with memory foam. On ours, I really have to try to feel it when my wife turns over.

How do you find the density on a listing?

Look in the specs for each foam layer’s density, in pounds per cubic foot, and find the memory foam layer. Under 3 is on the light side and wears out a bit quicker, 3 to 5 is the middle band, and over 5 is dense.

Three IKEA foam mattresses today, and where their memory foam falls

Mattress Memory foam, pounds per cubic foot Where it falls
IKEA ÅSBYGDA 3.1 The middle band
IKEA ÅKREHAMN 3.1 The middle band
IKEA ÅBROTTEN 3.1 The middle band

If you sleep neither hot nor cold, the middle band is the one to look for, and all three beds in the table above sit in it. Over 5 lasts longer, but it also sleeps warmer.

Questions about memory foam

Do memory foam mattresses last?

They do, and a dense one keeps its shape and support longer than a light one. The memory foam layer’s density tells you which you’ve got.

Why are people no longer buying memory foam mattresses?

If they are, heat could be part of it, and some owners say their memory foam bed sleeps hot. Memory foam softens as it warms, and the denser foam that lasts longer also tends to sleep warmer.
