How Often to Rotate Your Mattress Depends on Who Made It

Can’t remember the last time you turned your mattress, or if you ever have? Here’s how often each brand wants it done, starting with the Saatva we sleep on.

The short answer

Turn your mattress head to foot once or twice a year and don’t flip it, but the company that made it gets the last word on both. We have a baby, so ours is zipped into a waterproof AllerEase Maximum, $30.99 to $49.99 at Target depending on size.

What each brand says

Brand Rotate head to foot? How often Flip it over?
Saatva Yes, except four zoned latex models At 6 months, then once a year Only the Zenhaven and Saatva Youth
Tempur-Pedic Optional No set schedule No
Casper Yes Every 3 to 6 months No
Purple Optional No set schedule No
Helix Not needed, but you can No set schedule No
Nectar No Not at all No
Thuma Doesn’t say No set schedule No
Brooklyn Bedding Yes About every 6 to 8 months Only the Plank models

Back in 2016, we bought a Saatva Classic in a full. We turned it whenever I remembered, maybe every six months or so, and I never noticed a dip in it, even close to ten years in.

Our queen arrived in November 2025, a Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid on Saatva’s adjustable base. We’ve never rotated it. It’s been almost a year, so I think it’s time.

What if your mattress brand isn’t in the table?

Go by what’s inside it. Casper would have you turn a hybrid every 3 to 6 months. Memory foam and latex can go longer, once or twice a year.

Type Sleep Foundation Casper’s chart
Memory foam Once or twice a year Every 6 to 12 months
Latex Once or twice a year Every 6 to 12 months
Hybrid No set schedule Every 3 to 6 months
Newer innerspring Once or twice a year Flip and rotate every 6 to 12 months if two-sided
Older innerspring 2 to 5 times a year Flip and rotate 2 to 5 times a year if two-sided

Ours is a hybrid, so the chart would have it turned every 3 to 6 months. Saatva made it, though, and Saatva’s own schedule wins, with a first turn at six months and then one a year.

Why bother? You lie in the same spots every night, and uneven strain on one spot wears a mattress out faster. Turning it spreads the load, so the whole surface breaks in evenly.

A mattress that gets turned can outlast one that never does by a year or more. That pushes back the day you’re shopping for a new one.

Is yours zoned?

If it is, it might not need turning at all. Zoned means the support isn’t the same from head to foot, and turning one can leave it less supportive. That’s why Saatva’s zoned latex models skip the turn.

Casper still wants its zoned beds turned every 3 to 6 months. On Helix’s Luxe and Elite, the extra support for your lower back runs across the middle of the bed, so turning them doesn’t move it.

Can you flip yours?

Probably not. Most mattresses made now are one-sided, with the comfort layers on top and a firm support core underneath. Flip one and you’re sleeping on the core, which is less comfortable and wears the mattress out faster.

On a Tempur-Pedic, flipping can damage the mattress and affect your warranty. Not sure which kind you have? The label or the care guide will tell you whether it’s double-sided.

Brooklyn Bedding’s Plank All-Foam and Plank Hybrid are two-sided, with a firmer side and a plusher one, so you can change the feel just by turning it over. Saatva’s Zenhaven and Saatva Youth flip too.

How do you rotate a mattress?

Spin it a half turn, so the end that was at your head ends up at your feet. The same side stays up.

  1. Do it on a day the sheets are coming off anyway.
  2. Slide it around, steering with the handles. Don’t lift it by them.
  3. Square it up on the base or frame, and make the bed.

It’s a two-person job, but shoppers say the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid turns easily.

Set a repeating reminder on your phone for a date you already notice, like the first weekend of spring or a birthday.

Our queen is overdue. Its first turn was due back in May.

There’s no bed frame around ours, so the mattress shifts a bit on the base, and we push it back into place. It’s not a big deal for me.

What else keeps a mattress in shape?

A protector on top, the right support underneath and a good cleaning now and then.

A protector looks after your warranty, too. On some beds, the warranty won’t cover damage from a spill.

Best for covering the whole mattressAllerEase Maximum Mattress Protector

  • Target about $31 to $50, depending on size
  • Amazon see price

What I love

  • A soft, quiet top over a waterproof layer
  • Zips all the way around the mattress
  • Fits a queen up to 15 in deep, so it covers an 11.5 in mattress like ours
  • Machine washable

Good to know

  • It zips on, so the mattress has to come up to fit it

Best for: a home with a baby or allergies.

It’s made to block dust mites, pollen and pet dander and to work as a bed bug barrier, so it does more for you than catch spills. Given we have a baby, it’s the one we use. The lifetime limited warranty is a lot of promise for a protector at this price, too!

If the zipper sounds like a chore, the Casper Waterproof Mattress Protector is the easier one to put on. It’s about $107 for a queen at Casper, and it goes on like a fitted sheet, stretchy sides and all.

Something solid underneath

If your mattress sits on slats, measure the gaps between them. At 3.5 in or less, you’re inside every gap limit these brands set. A gap wider than your own brand’s limit can void the warranty.

If yours sits on a foundation that’s more than seven years old, sagging or damaged, Saatva wants it replaced.

A vacuum and some baking soda

Give your mattress a vacuum at least twice a year. For smells, sprinkle on baking soda, leave it a full day, then vacuum it up. Spot clean any stains with a mild soap.

Leave the cover on unless the care instructions say it comes off. On a Nectar or a Brooklyn Bedding, taking it off voids the warranty.

Vacuuming twice a year lines up nicely with turning it, so one phone reminder can cover both.

Questions about rotating a mattress

How can I tell if my mattress needs rotating?

When your side starts to feel softer than the rest of the bed, turn it, even if it hasn’t been six months. A dip that’s still there after you get up is a different problem.

What happens if you don’t rotate your mattress?

The spots you sleep on take all the wear, and uneven strain wears a mattress out faster. A Tempur-Pedic is the exception, because skipping the turn won’t affect its comfort or performance.

Can you rotate your mattress too often?

No, unless the company that made it says not to rotate it at all, the way Nectar does for its own beds.

Does flipping a mattress make a difference?

Only on a two-sided mattress, like Brooklyn Bedding’s Plank models or Saatva’s Zenhaven. On a one-sided one it makes things worse, because you end up sleeping on the support layer.
