We Tried Other Mattresses, Then Bought the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid

If you want a mattress that really holds you up, here is what our first year on this one was like, rough first weeks and all.

By Franco N.·Updated October 15, 2026

The short answer

Yes, nearly a year in, it’s really comfortable, with firm support you don’t sink into. I’d buy it again from Saatva for about $2,150 in a queen, because my side doesn’t move as much when my wife rolls over.

The numbers

  • Firmness: Medium, the only option, 5 to 7 on Saatva’s 10-point scale
  • Height: 11.5 inches
  • Trial: 365 nights on the mattress
  • Warranty: Lifetime
  • Rating: 4.8 stars over 345 reviews at saatva.com
  • Ours: since November 2025, a queen on Saatva’s Adjustable Base, after a 2016 Saatva Classic full

Is the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid worth it?

I think so. It’s the second Saatva we’ve bought.

Our first Saatva was a Classic in a full, back in 2016. Close to ten years later, it was still extremely comfortable to sleep on.

Then my wife was pregnant, and the full was getting too tight. We had to upgrade to get ready for the baby.

We tried a few different mattresses before we did, just to make sure, but I still kept coming back to Saatva.

At the Saatva store in New York City, I told Angelique, who was helping us, that I like the support of an innerspring. She had me try the Memory Foam Hybrid, and I liked it.

It has the softness of memory foam with the support of an innerspring underneath. I also felt like switching it up a bit after all those years on a Classic.

The edges are firm, too, so you can sit on the side of the bed to pull your socks on without sliding off.

How firm is the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid, and what is the break-in like?

Firmer than “medium” sounds, especially in the first weeks.

Our first year on the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid, from ordering in a Saatva store in October 2025 to a free topper in mid-December and the topper coming off nearly a year in

Ours arrived in November. By mid-December, about six weeks in, it wasn’t going well.

I wrote to Saatva: “Both my wife and I are getting pretty bad back pains during this break-in period. It feels much too firm for us at the moment.”

Saatva ordered a free topper for us the same day I asked.

The back pain eased after about a month on the topper. We kept it on for close to a year, mostly because we forgot it was there. Recently we took it off, and now it pads the living room rug inside the baby’s playpen.

On the mattress alone, it’s just the perfect amount of firmness for me. I don’t sink in, and it just supports my body.

Why does it feel so firm? The foam on top is thinner than on most hybrids, so you settle onto the coils sooner. A lighter side sleeper can feel them pushing back at the shoulders and hips.

If you’re in your first weeks and your back hurts, give it time before you decide.

And ask Saatva before you think about sending it back. That’s how we got our topper. I can’t promise they’ll do the same for you, but it costs nothing to ask.

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid or Saatva Classic?

If you share the bed, I’d get the Memory Foam Hybrid. I chose ours because it keeps still when one of us shifts. I can feel my wife turn over if I really try, but barely.

It’s a big improvement on our old Classic. A very light sleeper may still notice a little.

The Classic is the better pick if you already know you want a softer or firmer bed than medium. It comes in three firmness levels, from plush to firm.

It costs a little more. If you want it on an adjustable base, get the shorter Classic, since that’s the only height Saatva’s bases take.

Is the Saatva adjustable base worth it?

For us, yes. It’s the first adjustable base we’ve owned, and we really love it. I don’t know why we went so long without one.

We read in bed with the head up. When the baby came, it was how we fed her and got her to sleep through those first few fussy months.

And after a long day of walking, we raise the foot and rest our legs.

How we use our Saatva Adjustable Base: head up for reading, feeding the baby and getting her to sleep, foot up to rest our legs after a long day of walking, and flat for sleeping

Ours is the plain Saatva Adjustable Base. It raises the head and the foot from a wireless remote, and that covers everything we use it for.

The Adjustable Base Plus adds massage, for around $350 more on a queen. Mattress Clarity found the massage hard to feel through a mattress, though. I’d buy the plain one.

There’s no frame around ours yet. The crib sits beside the bed, and we wanted to see how it all fits first. We may add one later.

The base takes the place of a box spring, so the mattress goes right on top of it. With no frame, the mattress shifts a bit and we push it back into place, but it’s not a big deal for me. We’ve never rotated it, and it’s been almost a year, so I think it’s time.

Saatva builds each base to order, so it’s final sale, with no returns or exchanges.

What are the complaints about the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid?

Mostly that it feels firmer than you expect, especially if you’re light or sleep on your side.

Less often, it feels a little soft or bouncy instead.

A heavier sleeper can press through the foam to the coils. “I felt like I was crashing right through to the springs.”

The angriest complaints are about delivery and packaging. Some mattresses also arrive with a smell that takes a while to fade.

Trial, returns, delivery and warranty

We sold our old full on Facebook Marketplace with its bed frame, since we were moving up to a queen. The new one came a little over two weeks after we ordered, the mattress and the base together, and the crew set it all up.

Every mattress comes that way, with free white glove delivery and setup in the room. Depending on your zip code, it usually takes 9 to 21 days to arrive.

They take your old mattress and foundation away for free, as long as you choose removal at checkout. They won’t take a mattress that’s stained or damaged.

You get a year to decide whether to keep it. If you send it back or swap it in that time, Saatva keeps a $99 processing fee and refunds the rest of what you paid, taxes included.

The mattress also carries a lifetime warranty. If ours ever started to sag, I’d file a claim.

Who it fits

Buy it if you want firm support and you sleep on your back or move between your back and side. It works on an adjustable base, too.

Skip it if you love to sink deep into memory foam.

Think twice if you’re a lighter side sleeper. A side sleeper of average weight usually does well on it.

Look at the Saatva HD if you weigh more than 230 pounds, because the foam on top may be too thin for you.

The fine print

The old name. Saatva relaunched the Modern Foam as the Memory Foam Hybrid and rebuilt it with coils. Some reviews were first written before the change and still use the old name.

On your own frame. Keep the slats less than 4 inches apart, with a center leg. Your own foundation or box spring keeps the warranty in place, though Saatva suggests a new one if yours is over seven years old or sagging.

The base app. The plain base also runs from Leggett & Platt’s Adjustable Bed Control app, on iPhone and iPad only.

Frames. The base won’t go in Saatva’s Sydney solid platform or storage frames, or in any platform bed with drawers.

Questions

Is the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid worth it?

Yes, if you want firm support you don’t sink into. We slept on a Saatva Classic for close to ten years before this one. Nearly a year in, the Memory Foam Hybrid has just the right amount of firmness for us.

Is the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid firm or soft?

It’s sold as a medium, but it felt much too firm to us in the first weeks. Now it feels just right.

Does the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid need a box spring?

No. It works on a platform bed with slats less than 4 inches apart and a center leg, on an adjustable base, or on your own foundation.

Can you return a Saatva adjustable base?

No. Saatva builds each base to order, so it’s final sale, and the 365-night mattress trial doesn’t cover it.

Does Saatva charge to return a mattress?

Yes. Inside the 365-night trial, Saatva keeps a $99 processing fee and refunds the rest.

Will Saatva take my old mattress?

Yes, for free, if you choose mattress and foundation removal at checkout. The crew won’t take a stained or damaged mattress.

Is the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid the same as the Saatva Modern Foam?

It’s the Modern Foam under a new name. Saatva relaunched it as the Memory Foam Hybrid and added coils under the foam.
