Kitchen Corner Benches and Banquettes

A corner bench is for people who already own a table they like and just need seating to meet it in the corner. Two pieces meeting at ninety degrees, or one L-shaped unit.

Depth is the dimension that decides whether it fits, and it is the one listings blur. A bench with a reclined back takes about 24 inches of wall. Without a back it takes 16 to 18. Measure for one and buy the other and you have bought the wrong thing.

The number you have to work out yourself

Almost every corner nook bench is backless, and the ones with backs never tell you how much back you get.

Back height above the seat is not a published field anywhere. It can be derived when a listing gives both overall height and seat height, and that subtraction is worth doing because the answer varies more than twofold:

Eighteen and three quarter inches of back supports your shoulder blades. Fourteen inches stops at the middle of your back. Zero means the wall is your backrest, which is fine against a wall and miserable on the open side.

Nothing on any of these listings says this. You have to subtract it yourself.

The benches, compared

Two exclusions worth explaining. The Wade Logan Cariana has the best back geometry here, 18.75 inches above the seat, and 76 reviews at 4.7 with zero one and two star reviews. This site’s rules require a real, sourceable drawback on every recommendation, and with no negative review in existence there is nothing to source, so it stays out until its review base grows. The Gracie Oaks L-shaped bench sits at 31 reviews, below the 50 minimum. All listing data was read live on August 3, 2026.

1. Lark Manor Ehrhart Tufted Back Corner Bench — the only one here with a real back

Seventy-three inches on one leg, sixty-two on the other, upholstered, tufted, and three separable pieces.

This is the largest bench in this research set and the only L-shaped one with a back that passes the inclusion rules. Fourteen inches of back above a 19.5 inch seat puts support across your lower and middle back but not your shoulders, so it is a sitting-up bench rather than a lounging one. For a breakfast nook that is the right call.

Three pieces matter more than they sound. A one-piece L has to fit your corner exactly. Three pieces let you set the leg lengths against what you actually measured.

Specs. Legs 73.37 and 62 in. Seat height 19.5 in, overall height 33.5 in, so 14 in of back. Polyester over rubberwood legs. 400 lb.

2. Lark Manor Eslick — best backless pair

Covered in full on the with-storage page. Two backless pieces, 45.5 inches of seat each, the deepest published storage cavity in the category at 15.2 inches of height, and the same bench Target sells as the Linon Tobin.

Backless is the right choice on the two sides that meet a wall, because the wall does the work and a back just costs you four inches of floor. Put the backed bench on the open side if you want one.

3. Three Posts Maniscalco — deepest seat here

Forty-nine inches long with a 19.25 inch seat depth, which is the only bench in this entire project to clear the 18 inch depth a working cabinet maker recommends.

Depth is what separates a bench you sit on from a bench you perch on. Everything else here runs 11 to 16.5 inches.

4. Lark Manor Selby — softest option

A single 45.5 inch upholstered module with a flip top and, uniquely in this set, soft-close hinges that the listing actually names.

Buy two for a corner. Removable zip-off covers, which for a bench beside a dining table decides whether it survives a year of meals.

What to check before you buy

Seat depth and overall depth are different numbers

Dimensions.com is the only source that separates them cleanly: 18 inches of seat, 24 inches of overall bench. The 6 inch difference is the angled back. Listings almost always publish the overall figure, so a bench described as 24 inches deep gives you about 18 to sit on.

Sixteen inches of seat is the floor. Corn Upholstery says never go shallower, and one meal on a 14 inch seat will tell you why.

Seat height, finished, is 18 inches

Same as a dining chair, which is what your legs expect. Fine Homebuilding builds to 17 inches at the front edge on one project and 18 finished on two others. The variation is whether the cushion is counted.

If a listing gives you a frame height without a cushion, add roughly 2 inches for a compressed 4 inch foam pad. Fine Homebuilding’s nook build puts a plywood deck at 16 inches with 4 inch foam compressing about 2, landing at 18 finished.

The back angle decides whether the bench is comfortable

Fine Homebuilding specifies 7 to 9 degrees of recline off vertical and sets a minimum back height of 16 inches above the seat, to support the thoracic region. Whether you linger on a bench or leave it usually comes down to those two numbers rather than the padding.

Nobody publishes the angle in a product listing. Sit on it if you can, or look at the side profile in the photos.

Two-piece or L-shaped

Two separate benches forgive an out-of-square corner because you can pull one slightly away and nobody sees it. A single L-shaped unit does not forgive anything. Given that interior walls can bow half an inch in 32 inches and still meet the NAHB performance guidelines, two pieces are the safer buy in an older house.

Baseboard

Whatever you buy will sit proud of the wall by the thickness of the base moulding, which Lowe’s stocks at 9/16 to 3/4 of an inch. In a corner that happens on two walls at once, which also throws the bench out of alignment with the corner even when the corner itself is fine. How to measure around it.

Toe kick

A bench with no recess at the base pushes your heels forward when you lean back. Fine Homebuilding’s nook build recesses the base 6 inches from the front face, which is deeper than anything you would put under a kitchen counter, and deliberately so. A bench toe kick has to swallow your heels while you sit. Look at whether the one you are buying has any recess at all.
