Who makes Lark Manor, and who sells it

Lark Manor is one of Wayfair’s own labels, so you buy it at Wayfair. There is no separate Lark Manor company behind it, and if a piece arrives damaged or short a part, Wayfair is who you call.

You can also buy the Eslick corner bench at Target, where it is sold as the Linon Tobin.

Is Lark Manor furniture good quality?

Yes, for what it costs, though some pieces are much easier to live with than others. The shoe cabinet, the curtain rods and the rug are the ones I would buy without much worry, because what goes wrong with them is easy to plan around.

Buy the bed only with a box spring under it. The dresser takes hours to build and its drawers can end up crooked, and the coffee table’s printed top can peel when you wipe it. None of it will become an heirloom, and at these prices I would not expect it to.

Buy the Aleatha, and set aside an evening rather than an hour.

Close the doors and the heap of shoes by the front door turns into a piece of furniture you walk past without noticing. As one person put it, “Just beautiful! My shoes are not all over the place!”

The instructions are hard to follow, some of the holes are not pre-drilled, and some cabinets stand a little wobbly at the end.

Lay every panel out, work out which face is the front before you drive a single screw, and push the doors shut after each tier goes in.

Before you order, measure the biggest shoe in the house. A men’s 11.5 barely fits, and anything bigger will not lie flat.

Buy these, and buy a center bracket at the same time if your window is wide.

From across the room they pass for a much more expensive rod. They hold heavier linen curtains without trouble, and they feel sturdy once they are on the wall.

A rod carries its weight at the brackets, so every inch you add between them adds sag in the middle, on any rod you buy. Stretched toward its full length, this one needs a center support. One snapped while its owner was putting up long curtains.

The wall anchors in the box are thin. If you are going into drywall with no stud behind it, use your own toggle anchors and put the packet ones in a drawer.

Buy the Jurado for the size, and plan the first week around getting the creases out.

People like this rug. The pattern is busy enough to hide a lot, which is what you want under a coffee table, and it goes down softer than you would expect from a plastic fiber (polypropylene).

It ships folded instead of rolled. A rolled rug relaxes in a day. A folded one arrives with hard creases across it, and at least one buyer never got it to lie flat.

Unfold it in the sun if you can, put it face down for a few hours, then lay it face up under the heaviest furniture in the room and leave it a week. A rug pad underneath pulls the last of it out and keeps the whole thing from skating on a hard floor.

The color can come out warmer or cooler than the photo, and one buyer opened the box to “a greyblue floral rug. Rats!”

If the rug has to match a sofa or a wall color you already live with, buy one you can see in person first.

Buy the Ameire only if a box spring is already in the room or already in the budget.

People love how this one looks, and they love what it cost. The wingback headboard is the reason they buy it. With two people, it is an easy build.

The listing marks a box spring as required.

Put a mattress straight onto the slats and you get the bed people complain about, flimsy and not very stable.

Before the box arrives, have a decent screwdriver and a spare handful of screws ready, because the included ones can be low quality. And if you sleep on a Sleep Number, one owner found it does not work with this frame.

A wide, vintage-look six-drawer dresser under $200, for someone who does not mind a long build.

Buy the Valera if you have a free afternoon and the patience to get the drawers right.

Some people put it together on their own and found it simple.

The build is long, though. Even people who like the finished dresser complain about it, and one of them said “the assembly was ROUGH” after at least three hours on their own.

Drawers that will not close properly are the complaint that comes back most.

If the carcass (the dresser’s outer box) is a fraction of an inch out of square at the back, a drawer catches at the front.

Build it on a hard, flat floor, not on carpet. Leave every screw a half turn loose until the whole carcass is standing, square it against a wall, then tighten from the top down. Fit the drawers last and check each one closes before you fit the next.

It is slower that way, and it is how you end up with drawers that close.

A low square coffee table under $100, with storage underneath, for a tight budget.

Buy the Weddel for a rented room or a first apartment, and keep coasters on it from day one.

Once it is together, people are happy with it. Sturdy, good-looking, and the square shape with the shelf under it swallows the remotes, the magazines and whatever else was living on the sofa.

Getting there takes a couple of hours and a lot of small parts. It can arrive scratched, so look over every panel before you start.

The top is a decal over manufactured wood, printed to look like grain, and water is hard on it. Peeling is the complaint that comes up most. One person found it “started to peel” as soon as they wiped it.

Use a dry cloth or a barely damp one, put coasters under everything cold, and set a tray under anything that might tip.

Wayfair now sells this exact table, on the same listing, as the Justine Basilico coffee table.

It stands 16.3 inches high, lower than it looks in the photos, so hold a tape measure against your sofa seat before you order. The top is rated for 42 lb, so it holds a lamp and a stack of books, and nobody should sit on it.

Is Lark Manor real wood?

Partly solid wood on the Ameire bed and the Valera dresser, and manufactured wood only on the shoe cabinet and the coffee table. Manufactured wood (wood chips or fibers glued and pressed into panels) holds a screw tightly the first time and loosely after that.

Build these pieces once, in the room they will stay in, and do not count on taking them apart for a move.

What goes wrong, and what protects you

The dresser and the coffee table take hours to build, and the rug and the bed can look a different color in person. The bed’s screws can be low quality, and the curtain rods’ wall anchors are thin. The warranties are thin too, 30 days on the coffee table and none on the rug, so check everything the day it arrives.

Open every box that day, count the parts against the sheet, and look at the color by a window before you build anything. Keep a good screwdriver and a few spare screws on hand, and tighten every bolt again after the first month.

What a return costs

You have 30 days from delivery, and the return shipping comes out of your refund. (Dropping it off at a Wayfair store gets around that.) Anything that arrived in pieces has to go back in pieces, so if you build the dresser and change your mind, you will be taking it apart again.

Keep the boxes flat behind a door for the first month, because the return goes back in them or in a box the same size. Clearance and Open Box items cannot come back at all, so check the listing for either label before you buy. And if you order the curtain rods on their own, they come in under $35 and pick up a $6.99 shipping charge, so add them to a bigger order.

Who should skip Lark Manor

• Skip it if you hate putting furniture together. Four of the six arrive flat, and the dresser and the coffee table both take hours.
• Skip the Ameire bed if your mattress is going straight on the frame. It needs a box spring and feels flimsy without one.
• Skip the Weddel if the coffee table will get wiped down after every meal. The finish peels.
• Skip the Jurado if it has to match a color you already own. It can look warmer or cooler than the photo.
• Skip the Aleatha if someone in the house wears a men’s 12 or bigger. Those shoes will not lie flat.

Where else to look
