The short answer

Get the Thuma Classic, just under $1,200 for a queen frame. It is the least expensive of the three, and it leaves room under the bed for storage.

Which Thuma bed should you buy?

If you are looking at a Thuma, you probably want a low wood bed that goes together by hand and comes apart again for the next move. All three do that.

I sold contract-grade furniture from 2016, and I still think a Thuma is a lot of money for a bed frame. If you are going to spend it, I would put it toward the Classic. It costs the least of the three, and it stays quiet.

Best for most bedroomsThuma Classic Bed

It stays quiet, and it leaves room under the bed for storage.

Pros

  • Solid and quiet. “These things are built like tanks.”
  • Goes together by hand, no tools
  • 9 inches underneath for a drawer or bins
  • Ships the fastest of the three

Cons

  • The Pillowboard sits low
  • Heavy boxes that can arrive on different days
  • Some frames creak a little

You can see the knots and the grain in the wood. Thuma makes it from rubberwood.

If your old frame squeaked every time you rolled over, you will notice the difference.

The Pillowboard is a padded cushion that stands between the mattress and the wall. It does not attach to the frame, and its cover comes off to wash.

It is soft to lean on, and it sits low. On a thick mattress it can look short.

If you can spend more, get the wood Classic Headboard instead. It adds about $800 to a queen. One side of the Pillowboard can slip down, while the wood headboard screws onto the bed.

Where to buy the Thuma Classic

Thuma, queen frame$1,195

If you want it upholsteredThuma Signature Bed

A wood bed covered in foam and fabric.

Pros

  • Low enough for a window wall. “I needed a low-profile bed to fit under a window”
  • Sturdy and quiet
  • Goes together in minutes, no tools
  • A linen blend or a wool felt cover

Cons

  • The fabric strip that holds the slats can tear
  • Twin, Twin XL and Full are out of stock
  • Spot clean only

It is low enough to sit under a window, and changing the sheets is easy at that height. With foam and fabric on every side, there is no hard wood edge to bump a shin on in a tight room.

The fabric that holds the slats together can tear as you set them in.

If you have a dog or small kids, get a darker color. Both covers are spot clean only.

Where to buy the Thuma Signature

Thuma, queen framefrom $1,255

Lowest to the floorThuma Essential Bed

A low wood platform that sits nearly on the floor, for a bed that looks grounded.

Pros

  • Heavy and steady. “Solid as a rock.”
  • Copes with a slightly uneven floor
  • The most headboard choices, an upholstered one included
  • Fewer pieces to put together than the Classic

Cons

  • Very low, so you may want a thicker mattress
  • More boxes, and they are heavy on stairs
  • Parts can arrive damaged
  • The last box can take weeks

If you love a bed that sits low with nothing up on stilts, I think the Essential is worth the extra $200 or so over the Classic. Once it is built, it is one continuous platform with no visible joints.

It is heavy, and the weight keeps it steady. It feels a little luxurious, too.

Where to buy the Thuma Essential

Thuma, queen frame$1,395

How high does a Thuma bed sit, and is it too low?

The Classic holds your mattress 12 and a quarter inches off the floor, and the other two sit lower.

How high each Thuma bed sits: the Classic frame is 13 in off the floor with 9 in of room underneath, the Signature 11.6 in and the Essential 11 in

I would not call it too low unless you are used to a tall bed, or getting up is hard on your knees. Your mattress sits on top, so if either one is you, a thicker mattress brings the bed up to meet you.

The Classic also leaves 9 inches under the bed. Thuma sells a drawer made for that space, for under $300, and a felt bin too.

Short on closet space? Buy the Classic and put the drawer under it.

What mattress goes on a Thuma bed, and do you need a box spring?

Put your mattress straight on the slats. You do not need a box spring, and Thuma recommends against one.

If you bought a headboard, a thinner mattress shows more of it.

An adjustable base works too, as long as it is a zero-clearance one that sits on the slats with its legs off.

How long does a Thuma bed take to put together?

Give it up to 35 minutes with a second person, unboxing included. You do not need a single tool.

Thuma says about five minutes for one person. Count on longer, because unpacking and laying out the pieces takes time too.

The wood pieces slot into each other, and a few screws tighten by hand. The corners are heavy and the slats take some fiddling to lock in, so it goes faster with two. “The assembly was pretty straightforward and simple..EXCEPT FOR THE SLATS”

A queen Classic frame comes in two boxes of 60 and 63 pounds, so before they arrive, line up a second pair of hands if you live up a flight of stairs.

Or skip all of it. For just under $300, Thuma’s White Glove Delivery carries the bed to the room, builds it and takes the packaging away.

What are the common complaints about Thuma beds?

Most of them are about getting the bed to your door, not about the bed once it is built.

Mattress Clarity had a 270-pound tester sit and bounce on the edge of the bed with four different mattresses and heard no squeaks. A few frames do creak a little. If yours creaks, the 30-day trial on a first order lets you send it back.

Thuma’s page says it ships in a few business days, but the boxes can come on different days, and the last one can take weeks to arrive. “Boxes arriving over multiple days is very very very inconvenient.”

Heavy boxes can be left at the door, so plan to be home on delivery day, or pay for White Glove and have them carried in and built.

Some pieces arrive chipped, scratched or cracked, or with marks in the finish.

The rest are about the Pillowboard sitting low, the price, and edges sharp enough to catch a shin in a tight room.

Is a Thuma bed worth the price?

Yes, if you keep furniture a long time and take it with you when you move.

The Classic is GREENGUARD Gold certified, so it gives off almost no chemical fumes in the room you sleep in. Thuma covers it with a lifetime warranty.

It also comes apart and goes back together without tools, every time you move.

The price can sting even when the bed turns out right. “I feel like I overpaid.”

I think the Classic is worth it. Pay the extra for the Essential only if you love the look, and for the Signature only if you want fabric.

If the price is more than you want to spend, these Thuma bed alternatives give you the look for less.

What if it is not right? Trial, returns, shipping and warranty

You get 30 days from the day it arrives to send back your first Thuma order, and the return is free. What you paid for shipping and White Glove does not come back.

Keep the boxes for that first month, because a standard delivery goes back in them. Send Thuma an email and they set up the return.

Thuma gives all three beds a lifetime warranty.

Which nightstands match a Thuma bed?

Thuma sells a Classic Nightstand and an Essential Nightstand to go with its beds.

Go by height. Pick the one whose top sits nearest the top of your mattress, so the lamp and your phone are right where your hand lands.

Who it fits

Buy it if you want a wood bed that will last through a few moves, and you are happy sleeping low. Get the Classic if you want storage under it.

Skip it if you want a tall bed.

Ask your doctor first if you have a latex allergy. Rubberwood comes from trees that produce latex.

Where to go next

Questions

How much space is under a Thuma bed?

Under the Classic, 9 inches, enough for Thuma’s own underbed drawer or a felt bin. The Signature and the Essential sit lower, and Thuma does not give a figure for the space under them.

Is the Thuma bed too low?

It is low, but not on the floor. The Classic’s frame stands 13 inches high, and the Essential, the lowest of the three, sits 2 inches lower. If you want to sit higher, choose a thicker mattress.

What are common complaints about Thuma beds?

Mostly delivery. The boxes are heavy, they can arrive on different days, and the wait can run to weeks. Some parts arrive chipped or scratched, the Pillowboard sits low, and it is a lot of money for a bed frame.

Is the Thuma bed worth it?

The Classic is, if you want a solid wood bed you will keep for years and take with you when you move. It carries a lifetime warranty, and it goes together without tools.

How long does a Thuma bed take to put together?

Thuma says about five minutes. With a second person, plan on up to 35 minutes, unboxing included. You do not need any tools.

Where are Thuma beds made?

Thuma works mainly with makers in Vietnam.
