Breakfast Nook Sets With Storage

Storage benches come in two designs and they behave very differently in daily use. A lift-top seat gives you the whole cavity but you have to move cushions, plates and people to open it. Drawers give you less volume and open while someone is sitting down.

Pick based on what goes in. Seasonal things go under a lift top. Anything you need at dinner goes in a drawer.

The cavity nobody will tell you the size of

Not one corner nook set published the size of its own storage compartment.

Every set in this category sells “hidden storage” as a headline feature. Checked across four of them, including the two with the largest review counts:

That last row is worth stating plainly. The Bagwell is one of the most-reviewed sets in the category and it has no storage of any kind. Its Details table has no “Storage Included” field, which every storage listing carries, and the entire description mentions no lid, compartment or flip top.

So if you are buying a nook set for the storage, you are buying a cavity of unknown size behind a hinge of unknown type.

Standalone storage benches are different. All three checked publish the interior:

Height is the number that decides what fits, and it ranges from 4.7 to 11 inches across three benches that look similar in photographs.

Hinges are where these fail

The Three Posts Maniscalco has 4,124 reviews at 4.8, and its one-star reviews describe the same failure repeatedly: “the wood broke that attaches to the hinge”, “hinges are weak and have bent in just two months”, “hinge is already broken and wood inside lid is cracked and caving in”, “both set of screws on the hinges have come off”.

That is a lid-stay hyperextending and tearing its fixings out of an MDF lid. When the identical break shows up four times, the design is the problem.

Only one product in this whole research set states its hinge type, the Lark Manor Selby, with soft-close hinges. Everything else leaves it unstated, and the Maniscalco reviews show what unstated tends to mean.

The benches, compared

The Eslick and Deral interior figures come from the hub research. The Eslick is the only nook-specific bench in this category that publishes its cavity. All listing data was read live on August 3, 2026.

1. Lark Manor Eslick Two-Piece Storage Bench — best storage in an actual nook bench

The only purpose-built corner nook bench here that tells you what fits inside it.

Each piece holds a cavity of 45.2 by 11.1 by 15.2 inches, which is fifteen inches of usable height, more than any other bench in this set. Two pieces means two of those. Backless and separable, so it adapts to the corner you have.

This is also the bench Target sells as the Linon Tobin, confirmed by matching internal storage figures and the KBLT1314 supplier code in Wayfair’s own asset URLs.

2. Three Posts Maniscalco Storage Bench — most storage, worst hinges

Eleven inches of interior height, 4,124 reviews, and a hinge problem you should plan around.

At 11 by 44.5 by 15 inches this holds more than anything else here, and 49 inches of length with a 19.25 inch seat depth makes it the deepest seat in this set, closest to the 18 inch comfort minimum.

The hinge is the catch, and the reviews are unambiguous. Four separate one-star reports describe the lid-stay tearing out: bent hinges within two months, wood cracking around the fixing, screws pulling free. The lid is MDF and the stay arm levers against it.

I would still buy it knowing that. If you use it as a bench that occasionally opens rather than a chest you open daily, it will likely be fine, and 4.8 across four thousand reviews says most people are fine.

3. Ebern Designs Joddie Flip-Top Bench — cleanest record on the failure point

Zero one-star reviews, no hinge complaints anywhere, and the widest cavity here at 51 inches.

Across the whole 2-star set the complaints are shipping damage and fabric defects, not mechanism. On a page about lift-tops failing, that is the relevant fact.

The trade-off is depth. Seven inches of interior height is the shallowest lift-top here, so this holds flat things well and bulky things badly.

4. Birch Lane Adayla Drawer Bench — no hinge to break, and a capacity problem

Three drawers over three basket cubbies, so nothing overhead can fall on your hands.

Drawers sidestep the failure mode this entire page is about. There is no lid, no stay arm and no hinge.

Weight capacity is 175 lb, and that rules it out for most nooks. This is a bench sold for seating two adults at a table, and 175 lb is the lowest capacity figure in this whole research project.

What the storage is actually worth

The interior is smaller than the exterior, by more than you would think. There is no published standard for how much, and I looked. The one manufacturer listing I could source gives a storage bench with exterior dimensions of 31.5 by 19 by 15.75 inches against an interior of 30.5 by 17.75 by 14.5, so about 0.6 inches lost per side and 1.25 vertically.

Apply that and a bench 24 inches deep on the outside gives you roughly 22 inches inside, before you account for the hinge mechanism eating the back few inches.

One product listing is not a standard, so use that figure to set expectations rather than to plan against.

Lift-tops have a cushion problem. The seat is also the lid, so anything on the seat has to come off before it opens. That is fine for Christmas decorations and bad for placemats. If you buy a lift-top, check whether the cushion is attached to the lid or sits loose, because a loose cushion slides off every time and an attached one adds thickness to the lid.

Check the lid support. A storage bench lid that falls is a genuine hazard with children around, and it is a recurring complaint in reviews of cheap units. Look for gas struts or a friction hinge rather than a plain butt hinge.

Drawers need floor clearance in front. A drawer opening into a 32 inch clearance behind the table leaves you very little room. If someone is seated opposite, they may need to stand. The NKBA figures assume nothing opens into that space, so a drawer bench effectively wants the 36 inch edge-past clearance rather than the 32 inch minimum.

Storage raises the seat. Some storage benches sit taller than a normal 18 inch seat to make room for the cavity, and that is the dimension that matters. DutchCrafters puts the gap between seat and tabletop at about 12 inches, which is what an 18 inch seat under a 30 inch table gives you. Push the seat to 20 and you are down to 10. Check the seat height rather than the overall height. The Adayla above sits at exactly 20 inches, which is the trade its drawers cost. Why the 12 inches matters.

Ventilate it if it holds fabric. A sealed plywood box against an exterior wall in a cold climate will collect condensation. Not every bench needs vents, but one holding cushions and linens against an outside wall does.
