AeraMax and Boneco Replacement Filters

Every AeraMax uses two filters, and they wear out on different clocks. Most people replace the wrong one first. Get the part number right and the interval right and the unit keeps working. Get either wrong and you are either wasting money or breathing through a saturated carbon mat.

Here is the mapping, taken from the Fellowes manuals rather than from retailer listings.

I have not held a 200, 300, DX55 or DX95 manual. Those rows come from Fellowes describing its own filters as fitting those models, which is reliable but is not the same as reading it off the manual. Check the number on your old filter before ordering.

The three tiers use different sizes. A 9287001 will not fit a 190. Check the number on the old filter before you order.

How often to change them

The manuals for the 90, 100, 190, 290 and DX5 all say the same thing:

• True HEPA: approximately every 12 months under normal usage
• Carbon: approximately every 3 months under normal usage

Worth knowing that Fellowes contradicts itself here. The AeraMax FAQ page gives carbon at 6 months for the 3/8 inch filter and 1 year for all others. That table appears to lean toward the commercial AeraMax Pro line rather than the consumer units.

Go with the manual that came with your unit. If you no longer have it, the three-month carbon interval is the conservative choice, and carbon is the cheap one anyway.

The indicator light is not a timer

All three consumer tiers have one. Amber means change it soon, red means change it now.

The useful detail is how it decides. The Fellowes AeraMax FAQ says the indicators consider “the quality of the air they clean, as well as the period of time they are being used.” So a unit running in a dusty room calls for a filter earlier than one in a clean room, and that is correct behaviour rather than a fault.

To reset it, per the same Fellowes FAQ and the product manuals: press and hold the filter icon for three to five seconds until the unit beeps. The HEPA icon flashes amber. Press to toggle between HEPA and carbon, then hold the one you replaced until you get a short beep and the light goes out.

On generic filters

Fellowes is explicit, and it is in every manual: “Do not wash and reuse the True HEPA or Carbon Filters, they will not work effectively. Only use Fellowes brand AeraMax replacement filters.” That wording is from the AeraMax 290 manual and appears in the 100, 190 and DX5 manuals too.

For the commercial Pro line, the Fellowes FAQ goes further: damage or performance issues caused by non-Fellowes filters will void the warranty. Read your own warranty card for the consumer units rather than taking my word for what it covers.

Third-party AeraMax filters exist and sell in volume. The honest position is that Fellowes has stated a policy and voiding a warranty on a unit you have owned for four years may not worry you. Just know what the policy says before you decide.

Coverage and CADR, if you are choosing rather than replacing

These come off the individual product manuals, one per row:

The 100 and the DX5 carry identical CADR figures but different stated coverage, 100 square feet against 105. Both numbers are Fellowes’ own. Read the five square feet as marketing rather than as a measurable difference. The units themselves each have their own page: the 90, the 190 and the 290.

Genuine AeraMax filters, checked against the live listings

Six genuine Fellowes parts, all read live on August 3, 2026. Filters are consumables, and consumables barely collect negative reviews. Several of these listings have no one or two star review text at all, so where a drawback cannot come from reviews it comes from what I can check instead, and each entry below names which kind it is. The methodology explains that rule.

1. Fellowes 9287201 True HEPA, for the 290, 300 and DX95 — the safest one to order

The best-supported filter on this list, and the only HEPA here with a four-figure rating count.

If you own a 290, a 300 or a DX95, this is the part number on your old filter. Amazon ships it directly rather than routing you through a marketplace seller. That is worth checking. Two of the carbon packs below come from a third-party office supplier with single-digit inventory, and those listings can vanish between one heating season and the next.

Fellowes rates the HEPA element for twelve months. That figure is independently confirmed by Home Depot’s listing for the sibling 9287101 filter, which states the same interval.

Four carbon pre-filters, which at the published three-month interval is a year of coverage.

The carbon layer is the one people forget. It handles odour rather than particles, and it saturates on a schedule roughly four times faster than the HEPA behind it. Running a clogged carbon mat does not damage the unit. It just quietly stops doing the job you bought it for.

3. Fellowes 9287101 True HEPA, for the 190, 200 and DX55

Middle of the AeraMax range, and the one part number confirmed by two independent retailers.

Home Depot lists this filter as fitting the 190, 200 and DX55 and states a twelve-month replacement interval. That matters because the drafts for this page originally carried a hedge: the 200 and DX55 rows came from Fellowes describing its own filters rather than from reading those manuals directly. Home Depot’s listing is a second source that says the same thing.

Carbon pre-filters for the mid-range units, and the only entry on this page with a real negative review behind it.

6. Fellowes 9287001 True HEPA, for the 90, 100 and DX5 — the awkward one

The genuine filter for the smallest AeraMax units, and it does not meet the bar the rest of this page is held to.

Thirty ratings. No direct buy box, only a see-all-buying-options link. Amazon flags the price as high, and its best-sellers rank sits above 1.3 million in Home and Kitchen, which is the signature of a part almost nobody orders through this listing.

If you own a 90 or a 100, the carbon 4-pack at entry 5 is the better-supported purchase and it is the filter you will replace four times as often anyway.

Boneco W200: no filter at all

This is the part people get wrong when they search for a “W200 filter.” There isn’t one.

The W200 is an evaporative air washer, so the air passes over a wet surface rather than through a filter medium. What it has instead is three consumables, and Boneco publishes an interval for each:

Boneco lists the AW200 as fitting the W200, W300 and W400 air washers plus the H300, H320 and H400 hybrids, so if you own more than one Boneco you can buy in quantity.

A note on the silver stick. Boneco’s own wording is replace every season, not once a year. For a humidifier used through one heating season those come to the same thing. If you run it year round they do not.

The A7417 instructions are specific: one packet in a litre of hot water, soak the base for sixty minutes. A three-pack is three descales, which at the stated interval is roughly two months of use.

Cleaning schedule, from the W200 manual: clean the water base, drum and evaporator mat every two weeks. Clean the fan and inner area yearly. After three days without operation, empty the base and refill with fresh water.

That last one catches people out after a holiday. Standing water in a switched-off humidifier is exactly the condition you are trying to avoid. More on why in air washer vs humidifier.

Components are dishwasher safe, which makes the two-week clean less of a chore than it sounds.

Boneco H680: the hybrid, and the gap in the record

The H680 is the hybrid, so it does have a real filter. Accessories listed on the Boneco H680 page are the A681 hybrid filter, the AH700 evaporator mat, AH705 silencing grease, the A7017 silver stick and A7417 CalcOff.

The A681 is a combined HEPA and activated carbon filter. Boneco describes the HEPA element as removing over 99% of PM2.5 and fine dust, with the carbon layer handling smoke, VOCs, formaldehyde and odours. It fits the H680 and H700.

Boneco does not publish a replacement interval for the A681. I checked its own product page for that part and it states compatibility and nothing about frequency. One US retailer, Pure n Natural Systems, tells customers to replace it annually. That is a retailer’s advice rather than a manufacturer specification, and I am reporting it as such because I could not find Boneco saying it anywhere.

The AH700 is in the same position. No US listing, no published interval that I could reach, and do not assume it matches the AW200’s 24 months, because it is a different part for a different machine.

If you have the H680 manual in front of you and it states an interval, that beats everything above, and I would like to know what it says.

The part nobody tells you

Genuine Boneco consumables are effectively unavailable in the United States as of August 3, 2026.

Boneco’s own online store is Swiss and prices everything in Swiss francs. There is no US storefront at boneco.us. The official BONECO brand store on Amazon US lists eight genuine accessories, including the A681, and every single one shows as currently unavailable. The genuine AW200 and A7017 have no BONECO-branded US listing at all, only European ones on the German, Spanish and Belgian sites.

What is in stock domestically is third-party compatibles. There are plenty of them, they are well reviewed, and I am not linking them, because the manufacturer documentation for both brands on this page says to use branded parts and washing or substituting them voids the performance claim. Recommending a compatible while quoting that instruction would be arguing with myself.

If you need a genuine Boneco part in the US right now, the honest answer is to contact Boneco directly and ask about distribution, or to buy from Europe and pay the shipping. Neither is satisfying. If Boneco sorts out US distribution I will update this page the week it happens.
